The Normans were the first people to build what we call castles-fortified house or fortresses built for noblemen or kings. Castles in England and Wales range from the earliest motte and bailey structures, whare there was simply a wooden building on top of mound together with a palisade and ditch, up to the highly sophisticated moated and towering palaces that appeared at a time of restoration and rebuilding shortly before the Civil War. The author covers about 800 castle which are arranged by countries, giving a brief description of each and setting out their opening hours. Details of grounds and museums are also given. This is a useful book to have in your car-you will find that you are never far away from a castle of some kind
