Fatimah : a play in 8 acts

Bafaigh,Hosein - Personal Name; Zurbuchen, Mary - Personal Name;

In Arab circles in the Dutch East Indies in the 1930s, plays were staged not only to entertain but also to educate and to further the emancipation of the traditionally-oriented Arab minority. These plays were written by young nationalists of Arab descent who had been born in the Indies and no longger identified with the Arab world. The playwrights wanted to emphasize that their community's future lay in an independent Indonesia. Some plays were well receiced, other evoked protests. Fatimah was one of the plays which stirred up commotion. The play came as a slap in the face to members of the Arab trade community, challenging their entrenched but stagnant position in society and attacking outdated ideas an practices.

with its insightful introduction by Huub de Jonge, this play, which was a call for the advancement of women's rights, is just as much about religious versus national identity, a subject that is even more topical in Indonesia today.
